Road Trip
The quintessential motorcycle road trip! All cliches apply–the open road, the freedom, the solitude–all of it. But the greatest pleasure is that tiny ball of fear in your stomach. It’s not the same dread that creeps into our lives over money, family, and the future. This fear is exciting, and motivating. It disolves the digital bric-a-brac that overwhelms us everyday. This is about being present: watching the traffic, minding the odometer to plot the next fuel fill-up, checking your watch to figure the remaining daylight, and hoping the weather doesn’t turn sour and grey. This is living but it’s often hidden by the fog of our day-to-day existence, the oppressiveness of our to-do lists and the banality of our misplaced worries.
But how to keep mindful of the priorities without dreaming of going off-the-grid? Is an occasional road-trip enough? Or does it require something deeper?
Looking for Adventure
I always loved the old Honda Fours. Incredible Japanese technology for the early 70s. Picked up this 74 CB550 a week ago. Wasn’t running, but my dad and I tore down the carbs, installed a new battery, and set the points and timing. Now it runs like a champ; ready for a cross-country road trip.

Put out to pasture.
Took this pic while a recent trail ride. At some point in the past, this truck was the apple of someone’s eye.

Worst winter…ever!
Ok, at least the longest winter ever. Rained like crazy yesterday and almost of the snow was gone… then last night, BOOM.

Winter wonderland of horror.
There’s a great trail and wooded area near my home in Canada that makes for a great hike–even through the snow. It gets eerie quiet and all you hear is the crunch under your feet and the ice cracking on tree branches. On my last hike I was listening to the very cool score to my latest film, Saving Grace. It was created by famed composer Varouje Hagopian and it’s incredibly creepy and powerful. It really gets under your skin but it makes me feel like I’m about to be bludgeoned to death in a snow bank.
Camping in the backyard.
Recently visited a pal north of Kingston. Had a great time. Checked out the Rideau Canal. Slept in my van on the back of his farm. Reminded me of when I was teenager and went on cool road trips. Froze my ass off, but woke up to a beautiful sunrise coming through the front window every morning. On the 3rd Day I finally got my ass up (about 5:30 am) to snap a few pics. You can’t tell, but I’m just wearing my long johns and my bonfire coat.
